Programme Description

Both Level 1 and Level 2 English Functional Skills are designed to enhance essential communication skills that are valuable in everyday work and personal situations. Level 1 provides a strong foundation in areas such as reading, writing, speaking, and listening, equipping learners with the confidence to communicate clearly and effectively.

The Level 2 programme builds on these skills, offering a deeper understanding of language use and enabling learners to develop greater proficiency in English. This includes improving accuracy in written communication, enhancing presentation skills, and refining the ability to interpret and respond to various types of information.

Functional Skills can also be delivered as part of an apprenticeship programme, as one of the requirements before progressing to EPA is achieving a Level 2 qualification or its equivalent (Grade 4 or above at GCSE) in English.

Case Study : Melanie White

'Part of my apprehension was sitting the functional skills tests. I even thought about giving up because I didn’t think I would pass the maths. My mentor and Jim, my Intec Tutor, believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. Through their guidance, advice, encouragement (plus buckets of tears—mine!), and a LOT of hard work and dedication, I passed (on my first try too)!’
