Programme Description

Both Level 1 and Level 2 Maths Functional Skills are designed to build essential maths skills, useful in everyday work and practical situations. Level 1 provides a solid foundation in core areas such as basic calculations, data handling, and understanding measurements, giving learners the confidence to tackle tasks accurately and efficiently.

The Level 2 programme builds on these foundational skills, offering a deeper understanding of maths concepts and enhancing learners' ability to solve more complex problems. This includes working with data interpretation, percentages, ratios, and measurements — skills that are vital in various workplace settings.

Functional Skills Maths can also be delivered as part of an apprenticeship programme, as achieving a Level 2 qualification or its equivalent (Grade 4 or above at GCSE) is a requirement for progression to the End-Point Assessment (EPA) stage.

Case Study : Melanie White

'Part of my apprehension was sitting the functional skills tests. I even thought about giving up because I didn’t think I would pass the maths. My mentor and Jim, my Intec Tutor, believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. Through their guidance, advice, encouragement (plus buckets of tears—mine!), and a LOT of hard work and dedication, I passed (on my first try too)!’
