The Rising Star award is given to a bright young talent who has shown exceptional growth on programme, and this year we’re delighted to announce that it has been awarded to Adam Young of SCS Group Plc.
During the pandemic, Adam took the difficult decision to step back from a full-time Assistant Manager role at a hotel and was recruited by Intec’s Apprenticeship Recruitment Service to join SCS as an apprentice. This role allowed Adam to undertake a Business Administrator Level 3 Apprenticeship alongside his work.
From the very start, he has excelled on his programme. His tutor, Yvonne Adams, comments: “Adam saw the value in the opportunities an apprenticeship brings. He has been proactive in working towards his EPA, and his work is completed to a great standard. It’s been fantastic to see him apply the skills he’s learned to manage a large improvement project, which has delivered cost savings to the business and ensured excellent customer service.”
Starting a new job can be intimidating, and as Adam has grown into the role, the positive effect on his confidence has been evident. Adam’s team manager, Marc, agrees: “When Adam first started with us, we could see great potential in him. Despite the initial nervousness of joining an already established team with strong personalities, he soon came into his own and became the Adam we know and rely upon today.”
Adam reflects: “I think the biggest improvement has been in my overall confidence and my verbal communication skills. Working with such friendly people in a very supportive environment has been pivotal to my development. As I’d struggled with my confidence before securing the position, knowing I would have regular development opportunities and one-to-one support has been perfect on both a personal and professional level. I now feel I can challenge processes and take ownership of my role, and I’ve developed new project management skills that have helped me deliver improvements.”
“It’s also been great to be able to share my knowledge with other members of staff.”
Adam embraces new tasks and has built up his resilience to change: “I have always struggled with changes to the working environment. I feel now that I adapt a lot quicker and no longer worry when change happens.” He has taken this in his stride, moving to a different role within SCS. Adam is now part of a small operations support team, working as a Technical Planning Analyst, helping to generate a turnover of £50 million. This move has given him a clear idea of what interests him in his long-term career.
We look forward to seeing more from Adam in the future.
