Matthew Page began his career with the NHS in 2015, following the completion of his psychology degree. In 2020 Matthew was a Pathway 1 and Take Home and Settle Coordinator at The Hillingdon Hospital NHS Foundation Trust - an organisation committed to delivering high-quality care to the residents of Hillingdon and surrounding areas, with a strong focus on patient safety, innovation, and continuous improvement. His role focused on supporting patients as they transition from hospital to home. In 2023 Matthew started a Project Management apprenticeship with Intec, supported by his tutor, Mandy Christie.
Matthew had been actively seeking personal development opportunities and in 2023 with the support of the Head of Department and the Chief Nursing Information Officer, Matthew was seconded in to a Project Support Officer role to work on the implementation of a new Electronic Patient Record system. This project aligned closely with the Association for Project Management (APM) competencies, enabling him to start his apprenticeship journey.
Throughout his time on the programme, Matthew has felt well-supported by the team at Intec. He's found the virtual training sessions particularly effective, with tutors drawing from real-world experience to bring the content to life. Matthew appreciated the interactive approach to learning, including teach-back presentations that encouraged active participation and deeper understanding. His tutor, Mandy, ensured that sessions were engaging and that Matthew could consistently apply new knowledge to his work within the NHS.
Matthew states "As someone who is visually impaired, I use assistive technology and I have benefitted from an inclusive approach to learning. The team at Intec have worked closely with me, they have ensured all materials were accessible, including the use if the RNIB Bookshare Library, labelled images, and materials provided in Word format ahead of sessions. Mandy also offered clear verbal descriptions during training, regular one-to-one check-ins and adjustments to ensure access to resources and necessary tasks with the building of my portfolio were completed."
Matthew feels that good quality information advice and guidance is critical in the design of a successful programme, Matthew advises "Focus is required in ensuring that the apprenticeship provider can with the employer to ensure that experiences are available prior to the start of the apprenticeship, to improve the adopting of new knowledge, skills and behaviours."
In 2025 Matthew passed his End Point Assessment. Reflecting on his apprenticeship experience, Matthew is proud of the growth and development the opportunity provided. Matthew is seeking to leverage the new skills and knowledge gained to contribute more effectively to his role as he looks forward to making a lasting impact on patient care and sevice improvement within Hillingdon Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
